It is with great pleasure that I am with you today to inaugurate the Blood Dialysis Center at the Private Hospital "St. George", which will be operational from 2020.
The creation of the Artificial Kidney Unit is an important addition to the services offered by the Private Hospital "Agios Georgios" and more generally to the health services offered to our fellow citizens in the wider Paphos region.
With 11 dialysis stations and with its highly trained scientific staff, the fully integrated dialysis unit can meet all the needs of patients undergoing dialysis and provide high quality services to haemodialysis patients.
Advanced technology in the field of dialysis enables healthcare professionals to have at their disposal machines with high quality and safety standards, so that dialysis sessions can be performed accurately and reliably.
Many of our fellow human beings suffer from chronic kidney failure, a condition with progressive, irreversible decline in kidney function, caused by kidney damage of varying etiology. Diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure are two common causes.
The impact of chronic renal failure is multidimensional, since the effect of the disease affects the patient's quality of life on both an organic and psychosocial level.
In the final stage of the disease the patient needs immediate support of renal function by dialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Dialysis is a vital therapeutic procedure for patients with end-stage renal failure, substituting renal function.
The inclusion of patients in a dialysis programme involves a change in their lifestyle, with frequent visits to the Artificial Kidney Unit, medication, numerous restrictions in fluid and food intake, resulting in a significant burden in addition to their physical and mental health. Encouragement and psychological support of the patients by the medical and nursing staff play a crucial role, so that the patients find the strength to cope and adapt to their new everyday life.
On the occasion of my presence at today's event, I would like to assure you that we remain firm supporters of the cooperation between the private and public sectors in the field of health care, which is now considered an urgent necessity, with the common goal of providing immediate and quality services to patients and upgrading health care as a whole.
In conclusion, I would like to congratulate you for your valuable and substantial contribution to the provision of high quality health services to our fellow citizens and wish you good luck in your work.
Thank you.
