Total Employment: 53,554
Government employment in October 2023 increased by 283 persons (0.5%) compared to the same month in 2022 and reached 53,554 persons. Permanent staff saw a decrease of 702 people (-2.7%), from 25,555 to 24,853. In temporary staff there is an increase of 2,557 persons (13.3%) reaching 21,837 compared to 19,280 persons in October 2022. The increase is primarily attributed to the increase in temporary staff in the Education Service, mainly due to the abolition of the purchase of services scheme in support programmes of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth from the school year 2023 - 2024.
A decrease is observed in all categories of permanent staff, while an increase is observed in all categories of temporary staff. The largest change is observed in temporary staff in the Education Service (increase of 24.2%). Hourly staff shows a decrease (-18.6%), which is mainly due to the transfer of hourly staff from the Ministry of Health to the State Health Services Agency, which is included in the Broad Public Sector, as of January 2023.
Compared to September 2023, the largest change is in temporary staff in the Education Service (23.0% increase). Employment in other staff categories remained very close to September, 2023 levels.
