Methodological Information

Data Coverage

Government employment includes: the Civil Service, the Education Service and the Security Forces. The Civil Service includes employees of Ministries, Departments and Agencies. The Educational Service includes employees serving in school units and the staff of the Productivity Centre and the Higher Hotel Institute. The Security Forces include: the Police, the Fire Service and the National Guard. In all three categories, employees are divided into permanent, permanent and temporary employees and hourly staff (regular, temporary and seasonal).

The figures do not include Members of the House of Representatives (Members of Parliament and Representatives of Religious Groups).

Source of Data

The source of data on employment in the Government is the General Accounting Office of the Republic. The data relate to individuals who were paid in that month regardless of the period and duration of employment.

Break in Time Series

From January 2024, the distinction between permanent and temporary staff was abolished. The Office for National Statistics has realigned the structure of government staff into permanent, permanent employees (PTEs), fixed-term employees (FTEs) and hourly staff. Therefore, there is a break in the time series and the data is not comparable with data from previous months.
