Government employment in January 2022 increased by 518 persons (1.0%) compared to the same month in 2021 and reached 53,382 persons. Permanent staff saw a decrease of 656 people (-2.4%), from 26,834 to 26,178. In temporary staff there is an increase of 1,242 persons (7.0%) reaching 18,937 compared to 17,695 persons in January 2021.
Compared to January 2021, there is an increase in all categories of personnel, Public Service (0.3%), Educational Service (2.2%) and Security Forces (1.7%).

There is a decrease in permanent staff in all three categories, with the largest decrease occurring in the Civil Service (-3.1%). In contrast, there is an increase in temporary staff in all three categories, with Education Service staff showing the largest increase (9.1%). In Hourly Staff there is a decrease (-0.8%) compared to January 2021.
Compared to December 2021, there is an increase in Public Service staff (0.1%), Education Service staff (1.2%) and Security Forces staff (0.4%). There is a decrease in permanent staff in all three categories, with the largest decrease in Public Service staff (-0.3%). In contrast, temporary staff show an increase in all three categories, with Education Service staff showing the largest increase (3.3%). There is an increase in Hourly Staff (1.0%) compared to December 2021.

METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Data coverage
Government employment includes: the Civil Service, the Education Service, the Security Forces, and the Hourly Government Workers. The Civil Service includes permanent and temporary employees of Ministries, Departments and Agencies. The Education Service includes permanent and temporary teaching staff serving in schools as well as staff of the Productivity Centre and the Higher Hotel Institute. The Security Forces include: the Police, the Fire Service and the National Guard. Hourly Staff includes regular, temporary and seasonal employees.
Data excludes Members of the House of Representatives (Members of Parliament and Representatives of Religious Groups).
Source of Data
The source of Government employment data is the General Accounting Office. Data are for individuals who were paid in a given month regardless of the period and duration of employment.
