Issues of common interest, focusing on the General Health Insurance Scheme, were discussed today by the Ministers of Finance and Health at a meeting held at the Ministry of Finance.
In his statements after the meeting, Finance Minister Makis Kerynos said the following: "It is with great pleasure that I welcome the Minister of Health, Mr. Michael Damianos. This is his first visit to the Ministry of Finance and I hope that I will soon have the opportunity to visit the Ministry of Health. We had a very productive discussion on all issues and we confirmed once again that as government and ministers, we recognize the importance of the GHS institution as a social achievement, which must continue and survive."
For his part, Minister of Health Michael Damianos said the following: "I would like to thank the Minister of Finance for a very constructive meeting. It was a first opportunity to discuss pending issues.
Asked whether the issue of the continuation of state support for the OCYPY until 2026 was raised during the meeting, the Minister of Finance noted that all issues related to the YESY were discussed during the meeting.

Asked whether the Ministry of Finance is positive regarding the extension of state support, Mr. Thunder said that "we all agree that the legislation should be implemented and depending on the degree of implementation of the conditions that have been set, the appropriate decisions will be taken. The government is not negative on the issue of extending the assistance, however, this cannot go on forever."
In response to whether the issue of better management of the GHS and improvement of the services provided by the OCYPY was raised at the meeting , Mr. Keraynos pointed out that the management of public money by whoever is being done must be exercised with great care, rationality and wisdom, as it is taxpayers' money. Therefore, he stressed, there must be efficiency and quality in the end result resulting from the management of public money.
Asked to comment on the fact that he has undertaken the most difficult and high-risk portfolio and that reports by international agencies ranked the GHS as the highest risk to public finances, Health Minister Michael Damianos said that all portfolios have their own difficulties and outstanding issues. "We will also respond to our own pending issues and through the proper cooperation of the relevant health institutions, the problems can be solved," he concluded.
Finally, asked about yesterday's power cut at the Nicosia General Hospital, he said that "it was an extreme incident which the OCYPY managed to control. We must always be ready for such incidents so that we can deal with them. An investigation is underway on the part of the OCYPY and where necessary it will be put in place."
