The Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment announces that the fire that broke out earlier today, June 4, 2024, at 13:05, at the boundaries of the communities of Apsiou and Gerasa, was brought under full control at 18:00.
The fire burned an area of about three hectares, covered with wild bushy vegetation with scattered stands of pine trees.
70 people from the Forestry Department, with 14 fire engines, six earth movers and five tankers, worked to extinguish the fire. In addition, a firefighting aircraft of the Forestry Department, as well as two helicopters of the National Guard operated from the air. The firefighting operations were assisted by the Fire Service with 13 people and four fire engines, the Civil Defence with 12 people and four fire engines and the Game and Wildlife Service with five people and two fire engines. Members of voluntary groups and local residents also participated in the extinguishing operation.
Firefighting forces will remain in the area throughout the night to monitor the fire and deal with possible reignitions.
The exact cause of the fire is being investigated by the police.
