The Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment announces that today, Monday, 19 August 2024, at 12:10 pm, a fire broke out in the community of Fikardo at the boundaries of the residential area.
The intervention of the forest firefighting forces was massive and immediate, resulting in the fire being brought under full control at 15:00, after burning two hectares of wild vegetation.
To extinguish the fire, 90 people from the Forestry Department with 13 fire engines, three aircraft, two earth movers and two tankers, as well as 10 people from the Fire Service with four fire engines worked to extinguish the fire. Civil Defence, the Provincial Administration and the Thera Service also participated in the extinguishing work, with a small fire engine from each service.
The cause of the fire is being investigated, with the most likely cause being electrical cables located at the point of origin.
