The Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment announces that the fire that broke out today at 13:54 in the boundaries of the Community of Gourriou was fully controlled at 18:00.
The fire burned an area of about 15 hectares covered with pine trees, bushes and other low wild vegetation.
To extinguish the fire 89 persons of the Forestry Department with 13 fire engines, 3 earth movers and 1 tanker truck operated. The Forest Department's firefighting operations were assisted by the Fire Department with 12 personnel and four fire trucks, Civil Defense with four personnel and two fire trucks and the Game and Wildlife Service with six personnel and three fire trucks. Members of voluntary groups, members of the Ambulance Service, members of the Police and local residents also took part in the operation.
In addition, a Forestry Department firefighting aircraft, a Police helicopter, the two Jordanian helicopters based in Cyprus and a British Bases helicopter also assisted in extinguishing the fire.
Members of the Civil Defence staffed Forestry Stations.
Fire-fighting forces will remain in the area throughout the night to monitor the fire and to deal with possible reignitions.
The exact cause of the fire is being investigated.
