[PIO] Foreign Minister paid an official visit to Kazakhstan

Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos paid an official visit to Kazakhstan yesterday, Monday, 25 March 2024, at the invitation of his counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Murat Nurtleu.

During his stay in the capital Astana, Mr. Kombos had a private meeting with Mr. Nurtleu, followed by extended talks between the delegations of the two Ministries. After the consultations, the two Ministers made statements to the media.

During the consultations, the bilateral relations between Cyprus and Kazakhstan were assessed with a view to further strengthening and deepening them. In this context, the establishment of a Cyprus-Kazakhstan Intergovernmental Committee was proposed by Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan also welcomed the decision of the Republic of Cyprus to open an Embassy in Astana. Particular emphasis was also placed on cooperation in the economic sector and connectivity issues. On this topic, the two Ministers discussed the prospect of organizing a Business Forum based on specific priority sectors and signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Air Services.

The Foreign Minister also briefed his counterpart on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue. Finally, the two Ministers exchanged views on European Union (EU)-Kazakhstan relations, regional developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and Central Asia region, as well as developments in Ukraine and the Middle East.

The Foreign Minister was then received by the President of Kazakhstan, Mr Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

Mr Kombos was also received by the President of the Senate, Mr Maulen Ashimbayev, and had a meeting with the Prosecutor General of Kazakhstan, Mr Berik Asylov. During the meeting, the two officials signed an agreement between Cyprus and Kazakhstan on the transfer of convicts.

Finally, the Minister visited the Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC). Renat Bekturov.
