At an event held today at the Central Offices of the Forestry District of Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta, two drones, donated by Exness Global Limited, were received. The donation was made under a memorandum of understanding between Exness Global Limited and the Institute of Cyprus (ICU) for the benefit of the Forestry Department for the needs of protecting forests and the natural environment in general from forest fires.
It is also announced that, in addition to the above donation, the Forestry Department received four more drones from the ICU, which are related to the implementation of a contract concluded with the ICU.
The event was attended by the Director of the Forestry Department, representatives of Exness Global Limited and representatives of the ICU.
In his address, the Director of the Department of Forests Mr. Haralambos Alexandrou, after thanking the company Exness Global Limited and IKY, praised the importance of the partnership between the Department of Forests, sponsors and research centers to meet the needs of the Department of Forests in modern technologies. The benefits of these partnerships are many. For example, securing funding to Cypriot research centres for applied products, but also ensuring continued support for these products.
He also mentioned that the use of drone technology in forest fire management will be an additional measure, both in preventing fires for the purpose of conducting aerial patrols to detect fires and/or arsonists, and in extinguishing them primarily by transferring images of the fire in the initial stages but also by identifying active fire hotspots, as well as by mapping the area.
In her welcome address, the representative of Exness Global Limited, Mrs. Maria Christofidi, said that this donation is a continuation of others and that it will contribute to both the prevention and extinguishing of fires through the use of state-of-the-art methods. She also said that the technology developed by IKY is adapted to Cypriot soils and will be beneficial for the protection of natural ecosystems throughout the country. In addition to the donation of equipment, Exness will cover the cost of three pilots to operate the drones for a period of two years. Jean Sciare, after thanking the Department of Forests and Exness Global Limited, said that IKY is using new technologies to develop and prepare the new state-of-the-art drones and that they will contribute greatly to both fire prevention and firefighting.
