The Department of Agriculture of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment is organizing an event on the occasion of the International Plant Health Day on Sunday, 12 May 2024.
The event, which will be held at the Athalassa National Forest Park (southwest entrance), Nicosia, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., is part of global efforts to raise awareness of plant health, which is an important denominator for food security, environmental protection and sustainable development.
Plants are life. We depend on them for 80% of the food we eat and 98% of the oxygen we breathe. For this reason, prevention and cross-border protection to avoid the introduction of new organisms harmful to plants is essential.
Limiting the spread of pests can undoubtedly become a more efficient method than trying to deal with them after they have been identified. Often eradication may become impossible, and managing their effects tends to be costly and time-consuming.
The event will include interactive and educational activities for children, focusing on the importance of plant health protection, such as completing an activity book prepared by the International Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), painting and potting various plants of the Cypriot flora, as well as information for young and old alike.
The event, which is open to the general public, will be welcomed by the Honourable Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr. Maria Panayiotou.
The aim of the event is to get the message across that plant pests and diseases should be kept as far away from our borders as possible, as "By protecting plants, we protect the source of life".
