[PIO] Event at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the presentation of commemorative stamps on the occasion of 50 years of diplomatic relations

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cyprus and Australia, a special ceremony was held yesterday, Wednesday 6 December 2023, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to present commemorative stamps issued by Cyprus Post with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ceremony, which was attended by Ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps, Cypriots in the diaspora, as well as members of the business and academic community of Cyprus with close ties to Australia, was addressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mr. Konstantinos Kombos, the Australian High Commissioner to Cyprus Ms. Fiona McKergow and the Deputy Director of the Cyprus Post Office Mr. Sofronis Tsiartas.

In his welcome address, the Foreign Minister referred to the presentation of the commemorative stamps on the occasion of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Cyprus and Australia, noting that the stamps highlight the nature of the close bilateral relations between the two countries.000 citizens of Cypriot origin, he stressed that the Cypriot community in Australia remains active and successful and stands out for its significant contribution to the country's society.

Mr. Kobos also expressed Nicosia's deep appreciation for Australia's support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus and its commitment to achieving a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, based on United Nations (UN) Security Council resolutions and international law. She also expressed thanks to Australia for its significant contribution to the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, where hundreds of peacekeepers served between 1964 and 2021.

In her address, Australian High Commissioner Ms. McKergow said that this initiative marks 50 years of strong diplomatic relations built on a century of shared history and human connections. Ms McKergow made special reference to the Cypriot community in Australia, whom she described as an essential part of the country's economic and social fabric.

Presenting the stamps, the Deputy Director of the Cyprus Post Office, Mr Tsiartas, referred to the historical relations between the two countries and their long-standing cultures depicted on the stamps through Australian Aboriginal art and the ancient and folk art of Cyprus. He concluded by noting that their enchanting motifs and symbols are points of reference for future generations as evidence of early human communication and as the basis of the civilisation of peoples walking in the principles of brotherhood and friendship.
