On the occasion of the European 112 Emergency Number Day, which was established in 2009 to be celebrated every year on 11 February across Europe, the Civil Defence wishes to welcome the widespread use of 112 to call for help in case of danger or emergency by Cypriots and European citizens. This date was chosen as it forms the 112 emergency number.

Civil Defence is the contact point in Cyprus with the European Union for the 112 number. Knowledge of the pan-European 112 number is considered important, as in cases of emergency, knowledge of local numbers is not required.

The Cyprus Police is the competent service which handles 112, referring calls, depending on the incident, to the relevant emergency services, such as the Ambulance Service and the Fire Service.

This year also marks 33 years since the introduction of 112 as the pan-European emergency number common to all citizens.
