The extension of the National Strategy for the Development of Mountainous Communities (ESAOK) with the inclusion of 50 additional communities in the mountainous areas of the Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos Districts is being promoted by the Government with a decision taken today by the Council of Ministers. The extension of the ESAOK and the communities included in it emerged after the examination and evaluation of the findings of a study carried out in cooperation between the Ministry of Interior, the Department of Urban Planning and Zoning and the Office of the Commissioner for the Development of Mountain Communities.
A key priority of the Government is the implementation of a comprehensive package of actions and projects aimed at reversing the wave of urbanisation and the revitalisation of mountainous areas. Through the construction of infrastructure and projects, such as roads, schools, health centres, employment and care facilities for the elderly and children, etc., the State's primary objective is to encourage private business activity and attract investment in order to upgrade and support mountain communities. The main objective is to create the conditions in mountain communities that will retain the existing population in them and, at the same time, make them attractive places to live permanently, especially for young families.
It is recalled that a recent enlarged ministerial meeting under the Minister of Interior examined the progress of the implementation of the 280 projects and actions included in the NAPC and agreed that all Ministries and Deputy Ministries should examine additional policies that could be included in the Strategy in order to enrich it.
