The Chief Electoral Officer, Dr. Elricos A. Ilias, immediately after his statement on the percentage of voters' origin by 10 a.m, at the Theophilos Georgiades Auditorium of the Press and Information Office, answered questions from reporters.
Asked to comment on the turnout data so far, Mr. Elias said he considered the turnout satisfactory and once again called on the public to come out to vote because of the critical nature of the elections. "We hope and expect that we will have a turnout that will be higher than 60 per cent," he added."
Asked about the elderly and the complexity of the ballot papers, Mr. Elias said there is no problem for them to be assisted, either by the presiding officer of each polling station or by a person of their absolute trust. The Chief Electoral Officer also said that he himself visited many polling stations where he saw elderly people doing well on their own, adding that voting is going very smoothly
Asked whether there were any complaints of improper behaviour at polling stations, Mr. Elias said that there were one or two cases, very few in proportion to the number of voters, which were dealt with effectively by the presiding officer.
With regard to incidents of breaches of the law in relation to the promotion of candidates yesterday Saturday and today Sunday, the Chief Electoral Officer stated that there were very few complaints, adding that the vast majority complied and that any breaches would be forwarded to the Legal Service for complaints to be made.
