Today, 11 June 2024, at the Filoxenia Conference Centre in Nicosia, the ceremony of proclamation of the six newly elected Cypriot Members of the European Parliament took place.
The President of the Democratic Party (DIKO), Mr. Nicolas Papadopoulos, in his statement to journalists, said the following. I will start by thanking all citizens who participated in these elections. Despite all the difficulties and the complexity of the elections, once again the Cypriot people have shown their maturity and the democratic culture they possess.
Congratulations to the Ministry of Interior and to the Election Service, because despite the difficulties, the whole voting process managed to run smoothly. And of course congratulations to all the MEPs who have been elected, because from this moment on they are above all representatives of Cyprus in the European Parliament and their primary duty is to fight for our people and represent the interests of our country.
But special thanks for his candidacy and congratulations for his election to his friend Kostas Mavridis. The Democratic Party through Kostas will continue to participate in the second largest political group in the European Parliament, the Coalition of Socialists and Democrats. And through our steady and significant presence in this political group, our goal is to stand up for Cyprus, to continue to defend the interests of our people and our country.
The immediate period ahead will be difficult for Europe with many challenges related to inflation, precision, energy costs and much more. And of course, in the case of Cyprus in particular, the great efforts for the resumption of negotiations and the resolution of the Cyprus problem.
In all these efforts, in order to move the entire European Union forward, we as the Democratic Party will also make our contribution, our participation, our effort. Thank you very much."
