- For the first time Cyprus will sit on Europe's highest governing body
- More than 90 members from across Europe voted
- She is the only woman among the Directors of the Board of Directors
Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights Ms Maria Stylianou-Lottidi was elected to the Board of Directors as one of the Directors of the European Region of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI Europe) and as the only woman on the Board of Directors.
In particular, in a recent election process for the nomination, by secret ballot, of the seven Directors of the Board of Directors of the IOI European Region, in which more than 90 ombudsmen and human rights institutes from the IOI European Region participated, Ms. Lottidi was elected as one of the Directors of the Board of Directors of the IOI European Region.
The election of a Cypriot Commissioner for the first time to the Board of Directors of the European Region of the International Ombudsman Institute is an important moment for the institution of the Ombudsman for our country, which in this way increases its influence in European affairs and Cyprus' footprint as a European state governed by the rule of law. It demonstrates the international recognition of the work carried out by the institution of the Commissioner for Administration, its commitment to the defence of human rights in the Republic of Cyprus and the defence of good administration and the principles of the rule of law.
The International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) was founded in 1978 and is the predominantly global organization for the cooperation of more than 200 independent institutions of ombudsmen/administrative commissioners from more than 100 countries worldwide.
The IOI is organised into six Regions (Africa, Asia, Australasia and the Pacific, Europe, Caribbean and Latin America and North America)
Each IOI Region aims, among other things, to promote regional participation in the activities of the IOI and to decentralise the work and activities of the IOI.
The main objective of the IOI Regions is to promote and ensure by the Regional Directors (Board of Directors) the protection of human rights and good governance, as well as the basic principles of IOI, namely independence, objectivity and fairness.
Furthermore, the IOI promotes cooperation with international partner organisations, capacity building through conferences, trainings and exchange of good practices among its members, providing practical support to Ombudsmen/Commissioners under threat or operating under adverse conditions, and providing expertise on good governance and the rule of law.
