The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN, Ms Maria Michael W. Lodge, Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN, presented on 21 June 2024 her credentials to the Secretary General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA-International Seabed Authority).
During the ceremony, the Permanent Representative noted that 30 years after the entry into force of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the establishment of the ICSG, the Authority is a fundamental pillar of ocean governance and is able to guarantee the orderly and safe governance of its area of jurisdiction.
Ms Michael reaffirmed the Cyprus Government's support for the mandate of the ICSG, not only to organise and control activities in the region, but also to ensure the effective protection of the marine environment and human life.
As an island and maritime state, he added, Cyprus has been and remains a firm supporter of the integrity and universality of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the "Constitution of our Oceans."
He also noted that the Convention provides the comprehensive legal framework within which all activities in the oceans and seas must be conducted. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, he continued, not only reflects the progressive development of law but codifies customary international law, thereby binding all States in the international community, not just the Member States to the Convention.
In conclusion, the Permanent Representative noted that Cyprus underlined the strategic importance of the Convention for the maintenance of global and regional peace and stability, as well as the promotion of cooperation and sustainable development and support for the peaceful settlement of disputes.
