Ambassador Andreas Hadjichrysanthou today, 3 February 2022, presented his credentials to the Secretary General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), Mr Michael W. Lodge, as the first Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the ISA. The ceremony was held online due to the coronavirus response measures in place.

During the ceremony, Mr. Hadjichrysanthou noted that, as an island and maritime state, Cyprus attaches great importance to the work of the Authority, particularly in the areas of ocean protection, marine scientific research and sustainable use of marine resources in the International Seabed Area. He also pointed out that the Republic of Cyprus is guided by international law and the Law of the Sea, as reflected in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and in this context recognizes the crucial role of the ICSG for the effective and uniform implementation of the international legal regime of the International Seabed Area.

For his part, Mr. Lodge expressed his great pleasure at the accreditation of the new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the ICBL and expressed his readiness to work towards deepening Cyprus' cooperation with the Authority, with a view to further strengthening the international legal regime of the International Seabed Area as contained in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, as we move towards the sustainable development of the mineral resources of the seabed for the benefit of all mankind.

The NWFD is an international organisation based in Kingston, Jamaica and its establishment is provided for by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 1994 Agreement on the Implementation of Part XI of the UNCLOS.
