Today, as every year, we celebrate 9 May, known as "Europe Day". Thinking back to the visionaries and pioneers of European integration Robert Schuman and Jean Monnet, we look back mentally on the evolution of the European project over the past decades, starting with the European Coal and Steel Community (1951) and the European Economic Community (1957) up to today's European Union (EU), which, in addition to a single market, has evolved and continues to evolve into a union of states based on democracy, the rule of law, the protection of fundamental rights and the abolition of all forms of discrimination for the benefit of all its citizens.
In commemorating this day, which this year coincides with the 20th anniversary of Cyprus' accession to the European family, the House of Representatives underlines the need to preserve the principles and values of the EU and expresses its firm commitment to the pursuit of conditions of peace and stability in Europe and its neighbouring region.
The ongoing military conflicts and the consequent loss of life of our fellow human beings remind us in the most painful way of the value of building the idea of European unification out of the wreckage of the Second World War, as well as the need for constant vigilance in order to preserve today the principles, rights and acquis which have been built up over time through sacrifice.
In the same context, through our common principles and values of solidarity, inclusion and tolerance, we are called upon to face every challenge, large or small, while safeguarding our European perspective and our European heritage.
