In the framework of the implementation of the Chemical Substances Legislation, the Labour Inspection Department has launched a campaign to control plastic products available in the Cypriot market. During the campaign, 15 samples were taken to check their phthalates content.

Phthalates are substances classified as toxic for reproduction and are included in the restrictions of Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation (points 51 and 52). According to these restrictions, products containing certain phthalates in concentrations higher than 0.1% by weight in a plasticised material must not be placed on the market.

Following laboratory analysis of the samples, carried out by the General State Laboratory, phthalates were detected in three of the 15 samples in concentrations higher than those specified in the legislation.

The Labour Inspection Department informs the consumer public that it has already initiated a procedure for the immediate withdrawal from the Cypriot market and destruction of non-compliant products.

For information, interested parties can contact the Officers at 22405611, 22405637 and 22405609, as well as visit the Department's website.
