The Department of Modern and Contemporary Culture of the Deputy Ministry of Culture announces the participation of Cyprus in the 37th Guadalajara International Book Fair, one of the leading international book fairs.

Cyprus will participate in the pavilion of the European Union, which this year will be the Guest of Honour at the fair. Cyprus' participation is being coordinated by the Department of Modern and Contemporary Culture of the Ministry of State.

This year, the European Union pavilion will host events with authors and other artists from 27 EU member states and Ukraine.

As part of the representation of the European Union, Cyprus will participate with a two-hour special, during which short films will be screened by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, the Press and Information Office and the Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO. This will be followed by the presentation in Spanish of the fairy tale "Spanos and the Forty Dragons" recorded by Hampi Tsangaris in the form of an analogue, based on the theatrical adaptation by Alexia Papalazarou for the "Antilogue Theatre", in collaboration with the ASSITEJ of Mexico. The visual material of the performance, consisting of images of the book by Hampis Tsangaris in animated form, will be projected in the context of the performance, covering the entire text.

As part of the exhibition programme "Literary Dialogues with Europe", the Cypriot writers Zeki Ali, Eleni Kefala and Stavros Christodoulou will participate in public discussions in the thematic sections "Writing from the margins", "How the writer experiences the contemporary crisis" and "How we write and read in violent times", respectively. At the same time, as part of the exhibition programme "Activities for professionals, meeting independent publishers", Cypriot publisher Haris Ioannidis will participate in a public discussion on "Independent book fairs".

At the European Film Festival, which will take place alongside the exhibition, one of the 30 films to be screened under the theme "Literary Works in Cinema" is "The Boy on the Bridge"[/I] by Cypriot director Petros Charalambous.

The Guadalajara International Book Fair, which takes place from 25 November to 3 December 2023, is one of the largest in the world and the most important in the Spanish-speaking world.

In 2022 it attracted more than 800,000 visitors, mostly young people, and offered more than 1,000 book-related activities to the public. The fair hosted 2,170 publishers, more than 14,000 book professionals, and 2,200 journalists and communication professionals from more than 40 countries. The fair's social media channels received more than 15,000 visits.

The Guadalajara International Book Fair is not only a book fair, but also an extremely important cultural event and a space for cultural dialogue.

Cyprus' participation in international events aims to promote the country's culture, literature and arts in the international arena and is implemented in the context of our country's policy of extroversion of contemporary culture.
