The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr Maria Panayiotou, had a formal meeting with the Ambassador of Greece to Cyprus, Mr Ioannis Papameletiou, at her office today.

On the occasion of the meeting, the excellent relations between the two countries over the years were confirmed on issues related to the Ministry's responsibilities, both at the level of the European Union (EU) and at the bilateral level.

In the field of agriculture, the common problems, challenges and pressures faced by Greece and Cyprus, as well as their common goals and aspirations were discussed, as well as the strengthening of cooperation between the two countries both within the EU and abroad through common policies, exchange of expertise and good practices. In this context, the Minister referred to the phenomenon of "christening" of potatoes of a different origin as Cypriot potatoes, which is observed in the Greek market and for which she had requested the assistance of the Greek authorities to address it during a recent bilateral meeting with her Greek counterpart Lefteris Avgenakis. In the meeting with the Greek Ambassador, it was considered appropriate to strengthen cooperation between the Ministries of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of the Republic of Cyprus and Rural Development and Food of Greece in order to definitively address this serious issue.
