The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr. Maria Panayiotou, had a formal meeting with the Ambassador of Egypt to Cyprus, Mr. Amr Mohsen Hamza, at her office today.
On the occasion of the meeting, the excellent relations between the two countries were confirmed, while ways of strengthening cooperation with Egypt in the fields of environment, agriculture, water resources and aquaculture were discussed.
In the field of agriculture, the common challenges faced by Egypt and Cyprus were discussed, as well as the strengthening of cooperation between the two countries in the field of sustainable agriculture, through the exchange of best practices, technologies and expertise to reduce the environmental impact of agriculture and promote sustainable food production. Reference was also made to the preparatory work, which is at a final stage, for the signing of Memoranda of Understanding for cooperation in the field of water management, as well as in the field of aquaculture.
With regard to exports of Cypriot aquaculture products to Egypt, the two sides agreed that efforts should be made by the competent Egyptian authorities to reduce the time of customs clearance and control of products in order to keep them marketable, based on their shelf life, as well as the procedures applied during physical and administrative controls of products in Europe and third countries, in order to facilitate trade of products and strengthen economic and trade cooperation.
