[PIO] Contract signing ceremony for the installation and upgrading of public transport stops and shelters across Cyprus, worth €62 million

The contract for the installation of 4450 new stops and shelters and the upgrade of 1000 existing stops across Cyprus was signed today, Thursday, October 5, 2023, at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works.

The contract was signed on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus by the Deputy Director of the Department of Public Works Mr. Eleftherios Eleftheriou and on behalf of the consortium "A.S. AIRCONTROL LTD & AMCO A.B.E.E." Mr. Kostas Louka, Director of the company A.S. AIRCONTROL LTD, in the presence of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Mr. Alexis Vafeadis.

The contract provides for. The construction and installation of public transport infrastructure throughout the country, as follows:

  1. 350 stops - pillars
  2. 1350 small shelters
  3. 650 large shelters
  4. 100 large shelters, suitable for mountainous areas
  5. 2000 simplified stops
  6. 500 electronic signs
  7. 450 baskets
  8. 200 bicycle racks and 20 bicycle stands
  9. photovoltaic systems for electricity supply,

B. The upgrading of 1000 existing shelters with foundation construction and pavement repair work in the area surrounding the stops

The design of this equipment has been prepared by a team of industrial designers and takes into account local conditions and available space on the road network. The new canopies provide uniformity, accessibility for disabled use, as well as safety and weather protection. They have lighting and electronic signs with an audible announcement of the arrival of the bus at the bus stop. In addition, they make use of renewable energy sources and have the possibility of scalability to adapt to future usage needs.

The contract has a duration of 15 years and a total value of €61,658,761.88 plus VAT and includes, such as municipalities, communes, school boards, prefects, bus companies and private individuals whose planning permission provides for the creation of public transport infrastructure.

During implementation, priority will be given to bus stops located on the main axes, to stops with high ridership and to transfer points. The Department of Public Works has developed a relevant investment plan and programming, which will be finalised in cooperation with the Local Authorities and will form the basis for the implementation of the project.

Based on the project timetable, it is estimated that stops/shelters on two main axes per city will be upgraded every year.

This project is another investment by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works to promote the use of public passenger transport and other environmentally friendly means of transport, having recognised the importance of having adequate infrastructure.

The project is implemented within the framework of the Cohesion Policy Programme "THALIA 2021-2027" with EU co-financing.
