The Foreign Affairs Council, under the French Presidency of the European Union, concluded today

Current issues of the Common Defence and Security Policy as well as the challenges faced by the EU due to the interventions of state and non-state actors in the regions where the Union is operationally engaged. They also discussed ways to enhance the security and autonomy of the Union in relation to its military capabilities.

Defence Minister Charalambos Petrides, who was present in Brest after the conclusion of the Council's proceedings, made the following statement:

"First of all, I would like to express our sadness at the loss of the President of the European Parliament. David Sassoli was a great Italian and a proud European visionary whom we all mourn today.

As regards the work of the Foreign Affairs Council, in the context of the priorities set by the French Presidency, which we support, we examined current and very important issues relating to the Common Security and Defence Policy, with a focus on the Strategic Compass that will guide our joint efforts in the European Union in the coming years.

We also discussed the European Space Strategy and were informed about the illegal actions of state and non-state actors in the areas where European Missions and Operations operate, as well as possible response actions, where as the Republic of Cyprus, we support the development of joint capabilities to counter hybrid threats."
