[PIO] Civil Defence recommendations to the public to minimise the negative effects of extreme high temperatures

The Civil Defence Force, following a yellow warning issued by the Meteorological Department, regarding extremely high temperatures expected to reach around 41 degrees in the interior and around 33 degrees in the higher mountains, makes the following recommendations to the public in order to prevent and prepare properly to minimise the risks and negative consequences of the heatwave:

  1. Avoid unnecessary travel and heavy physical work in the sun.
  2. Avoid sunbathing, walking for long periods of time or running in the sun.
  3. Avoid crowded places.
  4. Wear cool, comfortable and light-coloured clothes.
  5. Protect your head with a hat.
  6. Wear good quality sunglasses that protect against the sun's reflection.
  7. Eat small, light meals, rich in fruit and vegetables and low in fat.
  8. Drink plenty of water and fruit and vegetable juices.
  9. Avoid alcoholic beverages.
  10. Avoid sudden changes in temperature.
  11. Use artificial means of ventilation (fans) or air conditioning.
  12. Consult your doctor for any health problems that may arise.
  13. Take care of relatives or other persons close to you who are elderly or in need of care.
