PREPARE NOW
(Especially if you are in mountainous / semi-mountainous areas)
- Check the water supply network, the pipes and the glazing of the solar water heater.
- Make sure that the gutters are clean and working properly.
- Make sure that the external pipes are insulated, otherwise ensure that they are insulated as soon as possible.
- Make sure that antifreeze is installed in the solar water heater. If not, ensure that it is installed.
- Provide heating material and food for several days.
- Provide snow-clearing equipment (e.g. shovels).
- Equip your vehicle with the necessary equipment to deal with extreme weather conditions (anti-slip chains, antifreeze, umbrella, waterproof jacket and boots, etc.)
- Make sure that you are constantly informed about the development of the weather conditions and the state of the road network.
DURING SNOW AND FALLS
- Avoid travelling.
- If it is absolutely necessary to move, use anti-slip chains and inform your family and friends of the route to be taken. It is best to travel during the day using main roads. Avoid driving in rugged mountainous areas, maintain low speeds and keep a safe distance from vehicles ahead.
- If you are on the road and your vehicle comes to a standstill, stay in it and place a brightly coloured cloth on the radio antenna or other prominent place so that rescue teams can locate you. Turn on the vehicle's engine for 10 minutes per hour and keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow.
- Confine yourself to enclosed spaces, keeping them warm.
- Do not allow children to go outside unaccompanied.
- Wear appropriate clothing and shoes. Prefer to dress in several layers of light and warm clothing instead of one heavy garment.
- Do not waste water unnecessarily and limit activities that require increased water consumption (washing machine, dishes, etc.).
- If the water pipes freeze, turn off the main water supply switch and call a plumber.
