[PIO] Chief Electoral Officer: Nomination process for the 2024 Elections completed

The nomination process for the upcoming elections of 9 June 2024 was completed yesterday. In total, 7,280 candidates are vying for 3,227 seats for the offices of Members of the European Parliament, President of Provincial Governments, Mayor, Deputy Mayor, City Councillor, School Board Members, Community Council Presidents and Community Council Members.

More specifically, the following nominations were submitted.

- President of the District Self-Government Organisation: 13 candidates, of which two for the Nicosia District, three for the Limassol District, three for the Famagusta District, two for the Larnaca District and three for the Paphos District.

- Mayor: 82 nominations, of which eight are for the municipalities of Kyrenia District, 20 for Famagusta District, 10 for Paphos District, 12 for Larnaca District, 10 for Limassol District and 22 for Nicosia District.

- Deputy Mayor: 258 nominations.

- City Council Members: 2,190 nominations.

- School Board Members: 686 nominations.

- School Board Members: 686 nominations.

- Community Council President: 745 nominations.

- Community Council Members: 3,243 nominations.

As reported by the Inspector General of Elections, Director General of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Elricos Ilias during a press conference, a total of five objections to the nominations for the Municipal Elections were received, concerning two nominations. One objection related to a nomination for Paphos District Councillor and was rejected. The other four concerned a candidature for the office of Mayor of the Limassol District. Three of them were rejected, while the examination of the fourth is currently pending. A total of 38 objections were submitted against the candidates for the Municipal Elections, of which 35 were examined and answered, while the examination of the other three is currently pending.

For 14 municipal districts, for which only one candidate for the office of Deputy Mayor was submitted, the candidates have been declared by the relevant Election Officers. Within today, the declaration will be made for the Chairmen and Members of Community Councils elected without unopposed candidates. It is noted that they will take office from 1 July 2024.

In the Communities of Souskios (Paphos District) and Monarka (Famagusta District) no nominations were received for the office of Community Mayor and a new nomination date will be set as soon as possible. Asked to comment on this fact, the General Supervisor of Elections noted that the Ministry of Interior is oriented towards the preparation and submission of recommendations to the House of Representatives next autumn in order to make some amendments to the legislation, possibly including the regulation of this issue.

Citizens registered in mayoral districts will receive up to six ballots for the election of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Municipal Councillors, Presidents of Provincial Self-Government Organizations, Members of School Boards and Members of the European Parliament. Registered voters in Communities will receive up to four ballot papers for the election of Chairperson of Community Council, Members of Community Council, Chairperson of Provincial Self-Government Organisation and Members of the European Parliament. As regards special polling stations for semi-inhabited and occupied municipalities and communities, citizens will receive ballot papers for the election of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Councillors and Members of School Boards or Mayor, Councillors and Members of School Boards or President of Community Council and Members of Community Council. Mr. Elias clarified that voters voting for a semi-occupied or occupied Municipality or Community will vote at two polling stations, i.e. one for their place of residence and a second for the place of displacement.

All ballots received by each voter will be cast in one ballot box. The ballot papers are printed in a different colour depending on the type of election. Specifically: Blue

(b) Presidents of Provincial Local Authorities: Purple

(c) Mayors: Yellow

(d) Deputy Mayors: Brown

(e) City Councillors: White

(f) School Board Members: Green

(g) Mayors: Orange

(h) Community Council Members: Grey

As a reminder, the total number of voters eligible to vote in the upcoming Election is 706,534. The permanent electoral roll, which entitles voters to participate in all elections, includes 568,608 Cypriot voters, of whom 837 are Turkish Cypriots holding a Republic identity card with an address in the free areas. The special electoral roll of European citizens for the Local Authorities Elections includes 21 640 voters. The special electoral roll of European citizens for the election of Members of the European Parliament includes 13 017 voters. Also included in the special electoral list for the election of Members of the European Parliament are 103,269 Turkish Cypriot holders of identity cards of the Republic of Cyprus, residing in areas where the Government of the Republic does not exercise effective control. A total of 4,691 voters have registered and will vote in the European Parliament Elections in one of the following cities abroad, where a total of 17 polling stations will be open: Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Komotini, Volos, Heraklion, Ioannina, London (Cyprus Community Centre and High Commission Building), Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Brussels.

Launch of "What I Vote" and "Where I Vote" services

According to Dr. Elias, from tomorrow, 1 May 2024, the online service "What I Vote" will be launched through the elections website.Through the service, citizens will be able to find out about the elections in which they have the right to vote, as well as the number of preference crosses in each of them. The service will be available in Greek, Turkish and English. This service will be available, as in the past, via internet, telephone or SMS.
