Increase in both Area (3.6%) and Value (17.0%)
The Statistical Office announces that the number of building permits issued by municipal authorities and provincial administrations in October 2023 amounted to 632. The total value of these permits reached €263.2 million and the total area reached 204.1 thousand square meters. With these permits, 1,003 residential units are planned to be built.
In the period January - October 2023, 5,906 building permits were issued, compared to 6,347 in the same period of the previous year, a decrease of 6.9%. The total value of these permits increased by 17.0% and the total floor area by 3.6%. The number of housing units increased by 10.3%.
Building permits are an important indicator of future activity in the construction sector.

Methodological Information
Purpose and Coverage
The purpose is to collect basic data concerning residential and non-residential buildings as well as other construction activities, such as civil engineering works, land division and road construction by province (urban and rural areas). For each category of project, information is compiled on the number of permits issued, the area and value of the project and the number of housing units planned to be built.
All building permits issued by local government authorities, i.e. town halls, provincial administrations of the Ministry of Interior and the Community Council of Agios Tychonas are covered.
Data collection
The Statistical Service receives on a monthly basis from all local government authorities copies of all building permit forms issued by them. The information contained in the forms is appropriately coded by the Statistics Office to produce the statistics. The Classification of Construction (CC) of the European Union (EU) is used to categorise the different building projects.

The Predefined Tables in Excel format include data up to December 2022. For January 2023 and thereafter, the update is made only in the CYSTAT-DB Database.
