The Statistical Office announces that the number of building permits issued by municipal authorities and provincial administrations in March 2024 amounted to 583. The total value of these permits reached €260.1 million and the total area 225.7 thousand square meters. These permits are expected to be used to build 1,171 residential units.
In the period January - March 2024, 1,876 building permits were issued, compared to 1,816 in the same period of the previous year, an increase of 3.3%. The total value of these permits increased by 13.2% and the total floor area by 12.2%. The number of residential units increased by 20.7%.
Building permits are an important indicator of future activity in the construction sector.

Methodological Information
Purpose and Coverage
The purpose is to collect basic data concerning residential and non-residential buildings, as well as other building activities such as civil engineering works, land division and road construction by province (urban and rural areas). For each category of project, information is compiled on the number of permits issued, the area and value of the project and the number of housing units planned to be built.
All building permits issued by local government authorities, i.e. town halls, provincial administrations of the Ministry of Interior and the Community Council of Agios Tychonas are covered.
Data collection
The Statistical Service receives on a monthly basis from all local government authorities copies of all building permit forms issued by them. The information contained in the forms is appropriately coded by the Statistics Office to produce the statistics. The EU Classification of Construction (CC) is used to categorise the different building projects.
For more information, interested parties can visit the Statistical Office Portal, under Construction, CYSTAT-DB (Database), Predefined Tables (Excel) or contact Mr Achilleas Moustakas at 22602156 or at amoustakas@cystat.mof.gov.cy.
The Predefined Tables in Excel format include data up to December 2022. For January 2023 and thereafter, the update is done only in the CYSTAT-DB Database.
