Decrease in both Area (2.4%) and Value (8,3%)
The Statistical Office announces that the number of building permits issued by Municipal Authorities and Provincial Administrations in January 2024 amounted to 587. The total value of these permits reached €221.3 million and the total area reached 198.2 thousand square meters. With these permits it is planned to build 834 residential units.
Compared to the same month last year, the number of building permits issued decreased by 0.5%. The total value of these permits decreased by 8.3% and the total floor area by 2.4%. The number of housing units decreased by 11.1%.
Building permits are an important indicator of future activity in the construction sector.

Methodological Information
Purpose and coverage
The purpose is to collect basic data concerning residential and non-residential buildings, as well as other building activities such as civil engineering works, land division and road construction, by province (urban and rural areas). For each project category, information is compiled on the number of permits issued, the area and value of the project and the number of housing units planned to be built.
All building permits issued by the Local Authorities, i.e. the Town Halls, the Provincial Administrations of the Ministry of Interior and the Community Council of Agios Tychonas are covered.
Data collection
The Statistical Service receives on a monthly basis from all Local Government Authorities copies of all building permit forms issued by them. The information contained in the forms is appropriately coded by the Statistical Office to produce the statistics. The EU Classification of Construction (CC) is used to categorise the different building projects.
