The Statistical Office announces that the number of building permits issued by municipal authorities and provincial administrations in April 2024 was 669. The total value of these permits reached €261.3 million and the total area reached 192.3 thousand square metres. With these permits, 930 residential units are planned to be built.
In the period January-April 2024, 2,545 building permits were issued, compared to 2,351 in the same period of the previous year, an increase of 8.3%. The total value of these permits increased by 8.9% and the total floor area by 15.7%. The number of residential units showed an increase of 24.2%.
Building permits are an important indicator of future activity in the construction sector.

Methodological Information
Purpose and Coverage
The purpose is to collect basic data concerning residential and non-residential buildings, as well as other building activities, such as civil engineering works, land division and road construction, by province (urban and rural areas). Information is compiled for each category of project, including the number of permits issued, the area and value of the project and the number of housing units planned to be built.
All building permits issued by local government authorities, i.e. town halls, provincial administrations of the Ministry of Interior and the Community Council of Agios Tychonas, are covered.
Collection of Data
The Statistical Service receives on a monthly basis from all local government authorities copies of all building permit forms issued by them. The information contained in the forms is appropriately coded by the Statistics Office to produce the statistics. The EU Classification of Construction (CC) is used to categorise the different building projects.

The Predefined Tables in Excel format include data up to December 2022. For January 2023 and thereafter, the update is done only in the CYSTAT-DB Database.
