At an event held on 16 December 2021, at the Leventis Gallery, in the presence of a six-member high-level United Nations delegation, more than 40 diplomatic delegations had the opportunity to be briefed in detail on the conduct of the 9th Ministerial Session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), on the theme: "Circular Economy, Education for Sustainable Development and Sustainable Tourism". The Summit is scheduled to be held in Cyprus from 5-7 October 2022.
The meeting, which was organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth (MESY), was attended and addressed by the Ministers of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, Foreign Affairs, Rural Development, Agriculture and Environment, who highlighted the importance of the Summit. In particular, they referred to the issues that the Summit will address, the policies that will be put forward for discussion and adoption, as well as the possibilities and opportunities that the Summit can provide, as a platform for communication and interaction between countries, to address the global challenges directly linked to environmental degradation and our quality of life.
At the same time, representatives of the United Nations delegation analysed the history of this Ministerial Summit, noting that it is the largest event of its kind in the world. In particular, as far as education is concerned, what was highlighted was the need for the wide participation of the Ministers of Education, given the fact that the new Strategic Framework for SD2030 will be adopted in this context.
An important element of the meeting was the assurance of the Heads of Diplomatic Missions in Cyprus that they will stand by the Cyprus Government and will cooperate in the best possible way so that the Summit will be a success and achieve its objectives in the best possible way.
