It was held today, in the Hall of the Ministry of Education and Culture (YPAN), the award ceremony for the Text/Article Writing Contest on the promotion of gender equality in the choice of studies and professions and for the New Logo Design Contest of the Interdepartmental Committee for Gender Equality of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
The Text Writing Competition was organised by the Interdepartmental Commission for Gender Equality of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, in cooperation with the Commission for Gender Equality in Employment and Vocational Training of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. The aim of the competition was to raise students' awareness of the existence of gender stereotypes and the attitudes that shape these stereotypes, as well as their impact on the decision making process for choosing studies and career paths.
The theme of the competition was: "Several people, even today, claim that there are professions that suit men and professions that suit women. For example, many people think that flying a plane is a more 'manly' job, while looking after children is a more 'womanly' job. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Finally, to what extent does gender influence a person's choice of studies and career?"
The competition was addressed to students in grades 5 and 6 of primary school, students in secondary schools, as well as students in high schools and technical and vocational schools. Participation in the competition was voluntary and the writing of the texts took place during non-working hours, in consultation with the teachers teaching the subjects of Language/Literature, Life Education/Health Education/Home Economics/Family Education and/or Biology.
The aim of the Logo Design Competition was to design a logo that reflects the desired gender equality in all areas of everyday life, e.g. education, work, society. The competition was addressed to students of high schools and technical and vocational schools. Participation in the Competition was voluntary and the design of the logo was carried out in consultation with the teachers who teach the Graphic Arts or Visual Arts course.
Dr Elena Hadjikakou, Director of the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute and President of the Interdepartmental Committee for Gender Equality of the Ministry of Education and Science, welcomed the attendees. Afterwards, Mrs. Josie Christodoulou, Commissioner for Gender Equality, Mrs. Louisa Christodoulides-Zannetou, Commissioner for Legislation and President of the Commission for Gender Equality in Employment and Vocational Education, Mr.

As regards the Article Writing Competition, three prizes were awarded in the Primary School category, three prizes and one commendation in the Secondary School category and three prizes in the High School/Technical School category.
