The Department of Forests informs the public that tomorrow, Friday, August 30, 2024, the risk of forest fires will be at the "Red Alert" level.
It is stressed that lighting fires without permission is prohibited and constitutes an offence which, under the Forestry Act 2012, is punishable by imprisonment for up to 10 years or a fine of up to €50,000.00 or both penalties together and, under the Prevention of Rural Fires Act 1988, by up to 5 years or a fine of up to €20,000 or both penalties together.
Lighting a fire for the preparation of food is only permitted on barbecues in picnic areas.
A warm appeal is also made to the public to exercise extreme caution during their outings, avoiding completely actions and activities likely to cause a fire, such as the use of tools or agricultural machinery that produce heat, sparks or flame, such as emery, welding and soldering.
Finally, if anyone notices smoke or fire they are urged to call 1407 immediately.
