View attachment 113409

The Department of Forests informs the public that today, 18 August 2024, the risk of outbreak and expansion of forest fires will remain at "Red Alert" level.

It is emphasised that lighting fires without permission is prohibited and constitutes an offence which, under the Forestry Act 2012, is punishable by imprisonment for up to 10 years or a fine of up to €50,000 or both penalties together, and, under the Prevention of Rural Fires Act 1988, by up to five years or a fine of up to €20,000 or both penalties together.

Lighting a fire for the preparation of food is only permitted on barbecues in picnic areas.

A warm appeal is also made to the public to exercise extreme caution during their outings, avoiding completely actions and activities likely to cause a fire, such as the use of tools or agricultural machinery that produce heat, sparks or flame, such as emery, welding and soldering.

Finally, if anyone notices smoke or fire, they should immediately call 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112 (Fire Department).
