The Department of Forests informs the public that tomorrow, Saturday, August 17, 2024, the risk of outbreak and expansion of forest fires will remain at "Red Alert" level.

It is stressed that lighting fires without permission is prohibited and constitutes an offence which, under the Forestry Act 2012, is punishable by imprisonment for up to 10 years or a fine of up to €50,000 or both penalties together and, under the Prevention of Rural Fires Act 1988, by up to 5 years or a fine of up to €20.000 or both penalties together.

Lighting a fire to prepare food is only permitted on barbecues in picnic areas.

A warm appeal is also made to the public to be particularly careful during their outings, completely avoiding actions and activities likely to cause a fire, such as the use of tools or agricultural machinery that produce heat, sparks or flame, such as emery, welding and soldering.

Finally, if anyone notices smoke or fire, they should immediately call 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112 (Fire Department).
