The Department of Forests informs the public that tomorrow, Tuesday, August 13, 2024, the risk of outbreak and extension of forest fires will be at "Red Alert" level.

It is stressed that lighting fires without a permit is prohibited and constitutes an offence which, according to the Forestry Act 2012, is punishable by imprisonment for up to 10 years or a fine of up to €50.000 or both penalties together and under the Prevention of Fires in the Countryside Act 1988 up to 5 years or a fine of up to €20,000 or both penalties together.

A warm appeal is also made to the public to be particularly careful during their outings, completely avoiding actions and activities likely to cause a fire, such as the use of tools or agricultural machinery that produce heat, sparks or flame such as emery, welding and soldering.

Finally, if anyone notices smoke or fire, they should immediately call 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112 (Fire Department).
