The Department of Forests informs the public that, due to the mass exodus to the forests for the Feast of Fifteenth of August, the risk of outbreak and extension of forest fires for tomorrow, Thursday, August 15, 2024, will be at "Red Alert" level.
A warm appeal is made to the public escaping into forest areas to exercise extreme caution, avoiding completely actions and activities likely to cause a fire, i.e. avoid lighting fires, using power tools that produce sparks or flames, as well as throwing cigarette butts and lit matches. Lighting fires for the preparation of food is only permitted in barbecues in camping areas.
It is emphasised that lighting fires without permission is prohibited and constitutes an offence which, according to the Forestry Law of 2012, is punishable by imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine of up to €50.000 or both penalties together and under the Prevention of Fires in the Countryside Act 1988 up to 5 years or a fine of up to €20.000 or both penalties together.
Finally, if anyone notices smoke or fire, they should immediately call 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112 (Fire Brigade).
