The Minister of Interior, based on the opinion of the Legal Service on the above issue, has decided not to place the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr Christos Zannettou, on leave.
This decision was taken bearing in mind that the initiation and completion of the investigation of the offences under investigation and/or the registration of the criminal case against the person in question took place before the entry into force of the provisions of Article 113 of the Municipalities Law of 2022 [LAW 52 (I)/2022]. Taking into account the fact that the Municipalities Act in force until 30 June 2024 [L.111/1985) DID NOT CONTAIN SIMILAR PROVISIONS TO ARTICLE 113 OF THE MUNICIPALITIES ACT OF 2022 ON LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR ELECTED MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL, MR. ZANNETTOU COULD NOT BE PLACED ON LEAVE.
