A ceremony was held today, Tuesday, 9 July 2024, at the Port of Larnaca, to receive a mobile X-ray diagnostic vehicle between the Customs Departments of Cyprus and Italy, which was provided by the Italian government, in the framework of the implementation of the "Amalthea" project. The Cypriot Government was represented at the handover ceremony by the Director of the Customs Department, Ms Theodora Demetriou.
The mobile X-ray diagnostic vehicle will be used in the framework of the mechanism established for the control, inspection, loading and safe departure of humanitarian cargoes transported by sea from Cyprus to Gaza. This substantial reinforcement contributes to the creation of sustainable conditions for the unhindered continuation of the operation of the Amalthea Plan, under the supervision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aimed at providing increased humanitarian assistance to Gaza under Mechanism 2720 under the relevant United Nations Security Council Resolution.
The Republic of Cyprus expresses its gratitude to the Italian Government for this important support to the humanitarian initiative of the sea corridor. Thanks for this contribution were conveyed by Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombo to his Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani during a telephone conversation that took place on 5 July 2024.
The close cooperation and excellent coordination between the Cypriot and Italian authorities at both political and technical levels reflects, inter alia, the strategic nature of the relations between the two countries, as well as our mutual commitment to carrying out the joint humanitarian mission for the relief of the civilian population in Gaza.
It is noted that Cyprus and Italy, both through the Amalthea Plan and the highly significant "Food For Gaza" initiative of the Italian Government, remain at the heart of the European Union's response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Cyprus, through developing synergies and taking initiatives, will continue, together with regional and international partners, to play a positive and constructive role as a regional humanitarian aid centre and facilitator in providing security and stability in our region.
