The Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (MINE), on the occasion of the announced protest event of the Guild of Academic Staff of TEPAK (SAP-TEPAK) and the Student Union of TEPAK (FETEPAK), which is scheduled to take place today Friday at 13:30, wishes to inform the academic community and the general public that the Ministry of Education and Science and the State actively and over time support the Public Universities of Cyprus, aiming at the continuous development and modernization of Higher Education.

The references to cuts in the budgets of the Public Universities do not correspond to reality, since all three budgets of the Public Universities approved by the Council of Ministers for 2024 are significantly increased compared to the corresponding budgets of 2023.

Specifically, with regard to the Cyprus University of Technology, the total State Grant in the 2023 Budget amounted to €67.2 million, while for 2024 the corresponding State Grant, submitted by the University and approved by the Council of Ministers, amounts to €75.7 million, a very significant increase of €8.5 million. It is stressed that the State has in the past approved Supplementary Budgets for the TEPAK when the need arose and the State's budgetary possibilities allowed it.

It is the firm position of the Ministry of National Economy that the solution to any problems is not strike measures, but finding a way out by submitting justified and documented requests and conducting a fruitful and constructive dialogue, always within the framework of legality and the State's budgetary possibilities.
