As part of controls for the implementation of the Chemical Substances Legislation, toys that do not comply with the provisions of the legislation have been identified in the Cypriot market after they were found to contain high levels of phthalates.
In the campaign recently conducted by the Labour Inspection Department of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, toys and childcare articles were taken for testing to determine their content of hazardous chemicals, in particular phthalates.
Phthalates are substances classified as toxic for reproduction and are included in the restrictions of Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation (points 51 and 52). According to these restrictions, toys and childcare articles containing specific phthalates in concentrations higher than 0.1% by weight in a plasticised material must not be placed on the market.
Following laboratory analysis of the samples taken by the State General Laboratory, it was found that phthalates were detected in the products shown in the attached table at higher concentrations than those specified in the legislation.
The Labour Inspectorate Department informs the consumer public that it has already started the process of immediate withdrawal of non-compliant products from the Cyprus market.
The public is invited to frequently visit the website of the Labour Inspectorate Department and to be informed through the relevant Announcements about all non-compliant products detected in the Cyprus or European market.
For further information on the above issue, please contact the relevant officers of the Labour Inspection Department (tel. 22405611, 22405637 and 22405609).
