The Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment informs the public that various events are planned for International Forestry Day, which is celebrated every year on 21 March. This year's theme, as defined by the United Nations, is "Forests and Innovation - New Solutions for a Better World."
The main event will take place at the Athalassa Environmental Information and Education Centre, tomorrow Thursday 21 March 2024, at 11:00. The event will be addressed by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment. Presentations will be included, as well as a tour around Lake Athalassa (St. George).
Co-organization with the "Cyprus Writers' Union" of an evening event on Friday, 22 March 2024 at 18:00-19:30, at the University of Cyprus. As the dates of the celebrations of World Forest Day and World Poetry Day (21 March) coincide, the event will include greetings, poetry recitations, audiovisual material, a thematic presentation by the Department of Forests and a short musical programme. A reception will follow at the end of the event.
The other events will follow, which will be organised by the Troodos and Paphos Forestry Districts and are open to the public.
Troodos Forest District
[*]Guided tour of the Caledonia Nature Study Trail on 21 March 2024, at 10:00. The tour will be conducted by a Forestry Officer of the Forestry Department and will start from the starting point of the Trail, which is located at its highest point, near the country house of the President of the Republic. [*]The second event will take place on 22 March 2024 at 18:00 and will be an evening of stargazing at the Troodos Botanical Garden "A. Γ. Leventis" located at the Asbestos Mine. The event will have the theme: "Observing the Starry Sky of Troodos" and the speaker will be Mr. Agapios Ilias. Telescopes will be available at the venue for use by the public with experienced stargazers.
Paphos Forestry District
[*]Guided tour of Chrysoroyatissa Oak Forest and the trail of the area on 21 March 2024, at 10:00. The tour will be conducted by a Forestry Officer of the Forestry Department. [*]Guided tour of the Akamas National Forest Park - Smiies hiking area and Pissouros site on 21 March 2024, at 10:00. The tour will be conducted by a Forest Officer of the Forestry Department. [*]Guided tour of the Kykkos - Chrysoroyatissa trail in Paphos Forest on 22 March 2024, at 08:00. The tour will be conducted by a Forestry Officer of the Forestry Department.
Also, on the following dates, lectures will be given by Forestry Department Officers at schools in Paphos District.
[*]Apostolos Pavlos High School in Paphos on 21 March 2024, at 10:00. [*]Polos Chrysochous High School on 27 March 2024, at 09:00.
