[PIO] Announcement of the Department of Meteorology regarding the temperature conditions in September 2023

After the very warm last two months of this summer, July and August, and the admittedly warmest September ever recorded on a planetary scale, According to World Meteorological Organization records, autumn in Cyprus made its entrance with no particular surprises in terms of temperature distribution during the first month of September. However, there were some isolated exceptions, which are discussed in detail below.

Table 1 below presents data for the main reference stations of the Department in relation to the records recorded during this September, as well as their ranking in relation to the extreme maxima during the period of operation of each station.

In particular, this September is ranked as the second hottest September for the Department's weather station at Paphos Airport, with an average daily temperature of 26.5oC. This shows a positive deviation of 2.4oC compared to the normal for the month, which is 24.1oC. It also ranks second in terms of both the average daily maximum temperature and the average daily minimum temperature, since it shows a positive deviation of 2.1oC and 2.6oC, respectively, with respect to the month's normal.

Also, this September is ranked as the third warmest September for the Department's weather station at Larnaca Airport, with an average daily temperature of 27.3oC, showing a positive deviation of 1.9oC. Moreover, this station is ranked second in terms of average daily maximum temperature, showing a positive deviation of 1.8oC compared to the corresponding normal of the month (32.7oC).

The weather station at the Athalassa Radiation Station, although it has the third highest average daily maximum temperature (36.1oC), nevertheless does not rank this September among the warmest Septembers for this station.

All of the Department's main reference stations show a positive deviation of their average daily temperature from the normal for the month, which ranges from 1.3oC - 2.4oC, however as a whole this September cannot be described as one of the warmest Septembers the island has experienced.
