The Department of Geological Survey of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment announces that on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at 03:08 a strong earthquake of magnitude M=6 was recorded by the seismological network of the Department.1 on the Richter scale.
The earthquake had its epicentre in the maritime area of Cyprus, 50 kilometres west-northwest of Polis Chrysochous and a focal depth of 25 kilometres. The earthquake was strongly felt throughout Cyprus, particularly in the Paphos province. It was also felt/perceived throughout the eastern Mediterranean.
By 05:30 a series of insensitive aftershocks had occurred, with a maximum magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale.
The phenomenon is monitored by the Seismological Centre of the Department of Geological Survey and the relevant information (seismic parameters, interactive maps, etc.) is published on the web pages of the Department of Geological Survey www.gsd-seismology.org.cy and http://www.moa.gov.cy/gsd and on the Department's Twitter account @CY_earthquakes.
