The Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment informs the public that lighting fires in the countryside to burn weeds, cuttings or other objects is prohibited.

It is emphasised that lighting fires anywhere in the countryside is prohibited, except for the preparation of food in specially authorised and arranged areas for this purpose in organised excursion and camping areas. Lighting a fire within the State Forest or within 2km of its boundaries constitutes an offence, which under the Forestry Act 2012 is punishable by imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine of up to €50,000.00 or both penalties together.

The public who use agricultural or other machinery with which ignition can be caused are also urged to be equipped with a fire extinguisher to avoid causing a fire and to protect their property.
