The Plenary Assembly of the Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts unanimously decided to elect Professor Georgios M. Konstantinidis as a Corresponding Member. The decision was taken at the 56th Ordinary Session of the Plenary Assembly of the Academy on 19.6.2024, on the proposal of the Class of Ethics, Economics and Political Sciences.
By virtue of the legislation, Corresponding Members of the Academy are distinguished personalities in the sciences, letters and arts, who by their works and knowledge are judged by the Academy to be able to assist it in its work and democracy in general.
Professor Konstantinidis studied at the Universities of Oxford and Indiana and subsequently served for years as an academic in the USA. He served for many years as a university chair at Carnegie-Mellon University and subsequently at the University of Chicago, Harvard and the London School of Economics. He holds the distinguished position of Leo Melamed Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago's Chicago Booth School of Business, where he has taught since 1979. His work ranks him as one of the world's leading figures of his generation in finance. His academic publications have advanced our understanding of asset pricing and financial derivative products, and he has contributed significantly to the development of the field of portfolio management. His research highlights some of the most critical issues in finance, such as the question of the excess return on equities relative to the return on Treasury bills. His work on the impact of transaction costs and taxes on the valuation of derivatives, as well as his studies on continuous-time models have had a significant impact on the discipline and helped shape current knowledge and understanding of the field of portfolio risk and return management.
Professor Konstantinidis has received significant international recognition for his contributions to the field of finance in particular and to economics in general. He has served, among others, as President of the American Finance Association, President of the Society for Financial Studies, Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, Director of the Western Finance Association. He has been Editor of "Foundations and Trends in Finance" and "Critical Finance Review", Co-Editor of "Annals of Finance", and Editorial Advisor to numerous prestigious journals. In addition to his academic capacity, he also had practical experience in the private sector.
Professor Constantinides also made significant contributions to democracy and the development of the University of Cyprus. He served as a member of the Interim Steering Committee of the University of Cyprus in the early years of its establishment and operation (1989-1995), when the foundations for the establishment of the University were laid. He was instrumental in the staffing and operation of the School of Economics and Management of the University of Cyprus, participating in evaluation committees and as Chairman of the Academic Council of the School. He also served as Chairman of the Council of the University of Macedonia (2013-2016), as Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Cyprus International Institute of Management (CIIM), and as a Member of the Advisory Board of the Athens Laboratory in Business Administration (ALBA). He was awarded Honorary Doctorates by the University of Cyprus (2011), the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2016), the Hellenic International University (2010) and the University of Piraeus (1999), a Fellow of the American Finance Association, and received the Academy of Alumni Fellows Award from the University of Indiana (1994). He has published one book and edited nine others, and has published numerous papers in prestigious journals such as the Journal of Political Economy, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, and Review of Financial Studies. He has also been invited as a keynote speaker at renowned conferences in the field of finance and economics in general.
