The Assistant Attorney General announces the submission of a petition to the Supreme Constitutional Court for the dismissal of the Auditor General

Today's interview of the Assistant Attorney General to "Kathimerini" confirms our information that, for some time now, the Attorney General and his Assistant, with the help of a private lawyer, have been working on a plan to eliminate the Auditor General for reasons of retaliation.

This intention of the Attorney General, which was first expressed on 7 September 2023 in an interview with the same journalist on state television, obviously constitutes retaliation for the fact that the Auditor General dared to highlight the action of the Assistant Attorney General to exempt from prosecution his former client and current client of his former law firm, where his wife still works. The interview of the affected Assistant Attorney General leaves no doubt about this.

We recall that there are other complaints of the Audit Service pending before the Authority against the Assistant Attorney General, for suspension of criminal prosecution for tax offences of persons with political influence, in connection with the black van and in connection with shareholders of a company accused of embezzling public money. There are also pending cases concerning the former President of the Republic and a 40-year friend of the Attorney General. The arrest of the Auditor General will pave the way for the withdrawal of all the complaints.

Since the Assistant Attorney General has announced the filing of a petition, any matter relating to the procedure and the substance of the case will be handled by the private lawyers of the Auditor General himself before the Supreme Constitutional Court.

The advisability of filing such a petition is obvious. A few weeks ago the President had said that the Auditor General was "doing an excellent job". International organizations note the "impressive progress" made by the Auditor General's Office in recent years and emphasize the critical role of the Office in uncovering corruption. It is this Auditor General that the Legal Service duo want to carve up. The reasons for the application are therefore obvious. Unfortunately for them, the Audit Service is not a branch of the Legal Service and the Auditor General is not their subordinate. The Supreme Constitutional Court will finally have its say. The threats of the Attorney General in September 2023 and the current full-throated attack and threats of the Assistant Attorney General will finally be able to be answered before independent and impartial judges.

As a Service, we will immediately inform the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) who within days would have issued a statement anyway on the obstruction in our work, which, among other things, will also cover the role of the Attorney General. We will also inform the European Commission which is preparing its Rule of Law Report.
